My life-changing encounter with an inchworm
I had a life-changing encounter with an inchworm a few weeks ago.
We were camping and I had just woken up from a delightful nap outdoors. It was a chilly, but bright and sunny, mid-April day.
I saw this little guy crawling along and got ready to flick him off, but just before I did, I realized how smart he was.
He took a step, felt the area around him, took another step, felt all around, made an adjustment to his course, took a step, felt all around… and kept doing this as he made his way across my vest.
This is a brilliant way to approach life.
A lack of knowing all the details often keeps us from taking the first step.
We have a general idea of what we’d like to do, or where we’d like to go, but there are so many obstacles and unanswered questions, we don’t bother to start.
From small decisions to major life-changing decisions, a fear of not knowing how it’s all going to work out prevents us from even exploring or taking the first step.
But this inchworm takes a different approach: #inchwormwisdom
The inchworm takes a step. He evaluates his surroundings. He tests the footing. He assesses if he should continue in the same direction or change course slightly.
Inching along, each step provides new information and data to factor into the bigger picture.
So many things in my life would benefit from this approach!
A few days after my encounter with the inchworm, my husband, John, and I were rock climbing. John was climbing a challenging route and wasn’t sure he could make it through the hardest section.
“Use your inchworm wisdom!” I yelled up at him from the base of the cliff.
“My what?” John didn’t sound impressed with my advice.
“Focus on one move at a time. You know, like an inchworm!”
Even though he was skeptical, John started focusing on just the next move. He stopped thinking about the moves up ahead. Where’s the next handhold? Where’s the next foot hold?
Before he knew it, he was at the top and rappelling down.
“That inchworm wisdom is pretty good stuff,” he said with a smile.
Since this happened, I’ve thought of so many ways #inchwormwisdom has helped me over the years. From changing careers to moving to new houses, from starting a business to learning to rock climb.
It takes some time and patience. My first career change was a slow process that took place over 3+ years. But taking one step at a time allowed me to explore options without taking too big of a risk. By the time the new job was in front of me, I knew for sure it was the right next step.
One step at a time.
Take a step. Look around and evaluate. Decide on the next step. Take a step and evaluate the results. Decide on the next step…. Repeat. And repeat. And repeat. And repeat….
How about for you? Is there something you want to do, but you aren’t sure of the outcome or the way forward?
What would it look like for you to apply #inchwormwisdom? What’s the first step you’d take?
I’d love to hear from you and how you plan to use #inchwormwisdom. Leave a comment and let me know!
